The county is replete with historic treasures. The Underground Railroad ran through Cayuga County and Harriet Tubman made Auburn her home. William Seward, recently made newly famous in Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals lived down the street from Tubman. The former New York Governor, Presidential candidate, Secretary of State and purchaser of Alaska’s home is now a historic museum open to the public. Cayuga County boasts the only intact Lois Comfort Tiffany-designed chapel in the entire world at Willard Chapel. The technology to make talking movies was created here and is show cased at the Cayuga Museum. Next door is the Schweinfurth Art Museum with ever-changing exhibits in various medias.

Cayuga County supports a vibrant arts community and is home to the Auburn Public Theater and the Merry-Go-Round Theater. Local artists and musicians showcase their work at intimate venues like Burritt’s Café in Weedsport. Wells College and Cayuga Community College provide ongoing educational opportunities. Outdoor recreation abounds from boating on the beautiful Finger Lakes to exploring winding trails or country villages on foot or by bike. And wineries are plentiful, creating unique Finger Lakes varietals. Once home to a mighty manufacturing economy, Cayuga County has transitioned to an entrepreneurial hotbed of small and midsize high tech and eco-friendly clean industries. The typical Cayuga County business employs four to five people, so the environment is perfect for a small, start-up enterprise. Agriculture continues to be a mainstay in the local economy, providing jobs while keeping the flavor of the county rural and pristine.

So take a drive around Owasco Lake or hike through Fillmore Glen State Park. Have a cup of coffee at the River Bend Cafe, learn to dance at Auburn Public Theatre. Drive along a country road and stop to let the turkeys cross, drop a line in Owasco Outlet and hook the catch of the day. Dock your boat along Cayuga Lake and have a picnic. There are a myriad of ways to enjoy Cayuga County. Come experience all it has to offer!
